Age Discrimination - did you know......

  • Age Discriminations came into effect on 1st October 2006.
  • There is no limit on the amount of settlements, raising worries about multi-million-pound claims similar to those in recent City sex discrimination cases.
  • Job applicants will not be required to provide their date of birth, or even a chronological CV that would allow recruiters to guess it.

  • Advertisements that specify an age range, for example 25-30, call for a certain number of years experience or even those that say the job would suit “a mature person” will fall foul of the law.
  • British Airways and Virgin confirmed they have scrapped age restrictions on air hostesses and other cabin crew.
  • Job advertisements should not include images of young people, and they should not use phrases such as “working in a team of young people”, or “vibrant young office is looking for a team player”.

  • Other countries have such legislation.  In Ireland, a fifth of employment tribunals involve cases of alleged discrimination on the grounds of age.
  • In America, age discrimination suits have provided rich pickings.  One study found the average payout in cases where such discrimination was proved was $268,926 (£144,600) compared with £94,000 for racial discrimination, £81,000 for disability discrimination and £65,000 for sex discrimination.
  • Asda have just recruited an 80-yearold and scrapped birth dates on its application forms.
  • Britain’s oldest worker, is thought to be Buster Martin, 100, who works for a car valeting company in Lambeth, south London.
