This year’s calendar is packed with a broad range of information and perspectives on equality and diversity. In particular, the calendar can help your employees to

  • Develop their understanding of the concept of ‘diversity’.
  • Build their appreciation of Age diversity and awareness of the 10 most common Age Myths.
  • Learn about the beliefs and practices of 8 main faith communities in the UK.
  • Keep track of the main religious festivals and special days.  This will help managers to ensure that planned meetings do not coincide with faith events.
  • Think about equality in a more global context given the rapidly changing demographics in the workplace.  Our Equality2007 initiative will be exploring the challenge of addressing poverty as part of our wider equality and inclusion work.
  • Appreciate the increasing importance of diversity to all types of organisations involved in the calendar.

Promoting Awareness

The Diversity Calendar is an important resource for employers.  Here are a few ways to use the calendar to help promote awareness of diversity in your organisation….

  • Provide all employees with a copy or send an email to all employees and let them know they can access the calendar on-line at no cost.
  • Use some of information from the calendar for regular in-house newsletters and memos, e.g. 10 Age Myths, information on Buddhism, defining diversity or the Equality2007 initiative.
  • Link the calendar to your website so that all employees and customers can access it.
  • Have a diversity event – perhaps linked with some planned management or training activity.
  • Hold an employee competition or suggestion scheme to promote awareness of diversity – and give free calendars to all entrants. Many organisations have a diversity champion.
  • Use the calendar as an integral part of your diversity and equality training throughout 2007 – e.g. in discussion groups.
