The programme addresses sectarianism & racism, and helps individuals
to promote the building of good relations within communities
What is the ‘Work it Out!’ Good Relations Programme?
The way that many of us will work in the future will be on a series of tasks and projects, or workpieces (paid, voluntary and working in our local communities) - rather than one traditional full time job.
‘Work it Out!’ shows individuals how to build their careers and their communities (at the same time) through a series of individual pieces of work, how to put ‘workpieces’ together, and how to integrate them into different aspects of our lives.
By working together on community sustainability workpieces individuals build relationships in a robust and grounded way.
Project Aims
- Address the realities of sectarianism/racism and other social factors, such as poverty and unemployment, which may impact upon sectarian/racist behaviour
- Develop positive attitudes towards engagement and inclusion
- Create practical outputs of purposeful activity for the benefit of participants and their community
- Promote the idea of shared space in today’s context (physical space and on-line space)
Target Group
- Individuals who may be susceptible to involvement in sectarian/racist behaviour
- Individuals in socially disadvantaged groups
- Individuals living in areas of high unemployment and high deprivation

- Making Good Relations and Shared Space part of our everyday activities.
- How can we as individuals make a positive impact in our communities? Working for a better future – strategies and tools. Shared Space is now local and global with the internet.

Key Benefits
- ‘Work it Out!’ encourages new thinking and creativity about community work, removing the one-dimensional, traditional view of voluntary activity.
- ‘Work it Out!’ provides the assurance that the route to personal and community sustainability can be made up of small steps and not necessarily one big leap.
- ‘Work it Out!’ defines the skills and approaches needed to be proactive and effective in finding workpieces - rather than the reactive and dependent way that groups often chase after funding for projects.
- ‘Work it Out!’ enables us to build our own community capital. We are investing in self-development, applying the experience gained in one workpiece to acquiring and completing new workpieces.
- ‘Work it Out!’ means that not all of our community development is limited to one or two projects. That dread thought, “What would happen if funding dries up?” no longer causes panic. Now we not only have other workpieces, but more importantly we have the skills, experience and contacts to create new workpieces to replace the one that is gone. Indeed, this continuous churning of workpieces within ‘Work it Out!’ is the norm - because our situation (personally and within our communities) is changing all the time.
- ‘Work it Out!’ provides a route to developing community based enterprises because workpieces can underpin partnership and collaboration.
Impact
- Reduction in the likelihood of sectarian/racist involvement by participants
- Potential for positive engagement by participants as a result of skills/tools developed
- Potential for participants to become positive role models within their own community as a result of skills/tools developed
- Continuation of positive participant relationships long after the Programme has been delivered
