Age Diversity

By 2011, 35% of the population will be over 55 and all of the indicators are that more people will need to continue working in life.  Employers will need to consider how they can best become an employer of choice for older workers and how they can retain older workers in an increasingly competitive market-place.  Those who don’t will be left behind.

This one day course comprehensively addresses the actions required to ensure full compliance with the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006.  The programme also provides practical suggestions on how to develop a workplace that is attractive and responsive to the needs of all workers irrespective of age.

Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace

Valuing diversity and equality of opportunity (inclusion) in all of its forms is an essential part of business life in 2008. Awareness of the challenges, opportunities, rights and responsibilities afforded by diversity and inclusion - in terms of age, gender, culture/ethnicity, disability and sexual orientation - is essential for both employers and employees in contemporary Britain.

Current legislation in respect of diversity and inclusion provides for identification of, and robust response to, incidences of discrimination, harassment or victimisation. While ensuring that delegates are informed of relevant legislation, this course is based on the view that training in diversity and inclusion is better received and acted upon when the emphasis is placed on the benefits of compliance – in terms of business outcome and a better working environment.

Micromessaging for Success

Twitter, blogs and other online content are forms of micro messaging which are used  as tools for marketing or disseminating information but humans have been using far more subtle types of micromessaging for many thousands of years in order to say what they really mean in an given situation.

Dr Mary Rowe of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is the person who coined the term ‘the glass ceiling’ in order to describe barriers to promotion for women in the workplace. Her research into human workplace behavior has revealed not only that human beings transmit a stream of micromessages alongside their overt communication but that such messages can have a profound impact on workplace performance and productivity.

We use both positive and negative micromessages and these are referred to by Dr. Rowe as microadvantages and microinequities. Positive micromessages can encourage, spark creativity and enhance leadership but negative micromessages can discourage, cause individuals to withdraw and erode perfomance. Micromessaging can have a direct impact on the workplace and on how an individual presents and is perceived in business.

Who is this for?

This masterclass is for all staff and will introduce delegates to the concept of micromessaging, demonstrate the impact of micromessaging and equip delegates with the tools and skills required to identify, modify and respond positively to micromessaging.
